Always enjoy her writings, so descriptive I live in North Carolina and spent a lot of my childhood vacations in the West Jefferson area and my family still maintains property there. Love her writing style and am anxiously awaiting her future books. The stories were short, well written and in some cases, left you wanting them to continue. That's the mark of a good story teller you always want the next installment.Product details

Patchwork Short Stories and Essays of the Appalachian Mountains edition by Annis Ward Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Because my family spends time in the Appalachian Mountains each summer, I was intrigued by this collection, and I was not disappointed with it.
The essays are written in a conversational manner and conveyed exactly what I think the author intended the way life was in that area in the early to mid-1900's. There is so much to learn about mountain culture that I will have my students read some of the essays and comment on them.
The short stories were not all about the mountains but all of them were good sound stories that harken back to writers like Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor and Carson McCullers. My favorites were "McCauley's Garden," and the "Boone Ramsey Stories."
I am very interested in the Appalachians and their people. This book was disappointing in that it was predominately fictional stories about murder and tragedy and very little about the Appalachians.
I bought this collection of short stories to read because I love my mountain heritage. I was not disappointed! The stories were wonderful. I especially liked the one about the day care in the old house. I also liked the story about the flood of 1940. You will enjoy this collection-especially if you like the Appalachian Mountains.
All I can say is wow! What a treasure trove of short stories and articles, well worth the $2.99 price. I don't know what I enjoyed the most Annis's reminiscing about her childhood, the stories about the unique people she's known, or the wonderful way she brings to life the woods and smells of the North Carolina mountains which she obviously loves so deeply. Some of her short stories are horrifying, such as McCauley's Garden; some are funny; all are absorbing.
